Our National Organization

MISSION: Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 – 19, dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

The Charlotte Chapter is a proud member of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, headquartered in Washington, DC.
Jack and Jill of America was founded by Marion Stubbs Thomas on January 24, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when she invited twenty other mothers to her home to discuss forming a group to provide social, cultural, and educational opportunities for their children at a time when such opportunities were not as prevalent for African-Americans.  Jack and Jill of America was incorporated in 1946, and has now become a membership organization of more than 230 chapters representing more than 40,000 family members.

The mission of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. remains relevant today.  Each chapter, inspired by the national theme "The Power to Make a Difference" creates programming each year seeking to stimulate the growth and development of our children through constructive educational, cultural, civic, recreational, health, and social programs.

Jack and Jill's mission extends to those outside the organization via our National Foundation.  Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Jack and Jill of America that addresses issues affecting African-American children and families by investing in programs and services that create a strong foundation for children to thrive long-term.
Local Jack and Jill Chapters support the goals and aims of the National Foundation each year by donating money that is

"carefully channeled to help eliminate some of the contemporary obstacles that confront African-American youth."  Recently, the Foundation outlined a new strategy to increase the presence of Jack and Jill of America on the national stage in order to broaden its reach and influence from "charity" to "investment".  The goal is to create real change in the lives of African-American children and their families by targeting the underlying causes of today's social problems.  To that end, funding contributed to Foundation will go toward the following three categories:

1. Foundation Philanthropic Focus Areas

2. INC special projects (i.e. Rebuild America, National Literacy)

3. National Response (i.e. Trayvon Martin, Hurricane Katrina)

Foundation’s three Philanthropic Focus Areas are:

1. African American Families

2. Education

3. Health and Wellness
